US President Election Media Essay 450 words
The point of this assignment is to reflect on some of the ideas we have recently been exploring in class in regards to the extreme polarization of media content in today's landscape. The election has ended, but the impact is clearly here to stay. In light of this, and in preparation for your final research paper, I would like you to do some comparative media analysis of how the Presidential results were reported.I am leaving the parameters somewhat open, but here are the basics:Choose a certain day/time to explore how 3 different news outlets were reporting some aspect of election news. These 3 outlets should be as different in tone and perspective as possible. Consider far extreme left and right sources if even you consider them to be unreliable--many people do not. Take this as a chance to see how "the other side" thinks if you are the taking sides-type. You could find reports during the day of the election or about any other defined issue or controversy within the race. Basically, make sure you are comparing different versions of the same story even if the facts differ. In a 450-word or more response, describe these three stories and explore their various versions of reality. What is different about the stories, and why might these outlets have the motivation to report the story as they do? What determines whether a person buys into a given news outlet's perspective, and how can that trust be manipulated?Consider also the nature of truth and reality online. How does an entirely mediated society evaluate what narratives and sources are trustworthy and which are not? What happens when, as is the case now, many people feel that big media is hopelessly inaccurate and biased--what happens when there is nothing to trust? And what is the eventual result of featuring the most extreme perspectives as a source of entertainment?
