Before I read this chapter I was truly against the common core. I then realize that the part I didnt agree with was just a tiny fraction of what the overall goal is.Standardsarenecessaryinordertomeasurethelearningthattakesplaceinoneschoolorplaceagainstotherschoolsandotherplaces.One student in Virginia could be getting a better education in Math, versus another student in California. All because that is what the state requires. TheU.S.DepartmentofEducationhasdeclaredthatallstatesandschoolswillhavechallengingandclearstandardsofachievementandaccountabilityforallchildren,andeffectivestrategiesforreachingthosestandards.Asaresult,theCommonCoreStateStandardsinitiativehasbeencreated .(Hall, G.E., Quinn, L.F., & Gollnick, D.M. (2014).Introduction to teaching: Making a difference in student learning).(ch. 11)I believe to insure that this country does not fail our future, we need to make sure all school meet these standards. The advantage being that everyone will be ready to move forward to the next level of their education and be confident doing so. Every child should be on the same page and know the same curriculum as another child across the country.The one disadvantage that I see with this is that every child learns different. My son has brought math homework home and the Common Core version is a lot different from the way I was taught. It is almost more confusing than before. (2014).Introduction to teaching: Making a difference in student learning).(ch. 11)I believe they are telling teachers how to teach, for instance, Common core math has to be done a specific way. If the child doesnt understand then they are out of luck. The teacher has to teach the child exactly the way they want the children to learn via Common core, versus being able to teach Math like they used to, and just make sure that the children are at the same level. It shouldnt matter how you teach them just as long as they understand the curriculum. Like I said before, every child is different and should be given the opportunity to learn a curriculum which best suits their needs as an individual. If the child understands the Common Core way, great. If not, then the teacher should be able to try a different approach, perhaps the old school way.
