So this week we are asked toselect from three different stories or videos and talk more in depth about oneof them. I chose to discuss the article, The Broken Contract from theNew York Times. This article talks about the three days after thehurricane struck in Louisiana and the top officials failed to rescue thethousands of citizens that were heldup ina convention center.So, thecontractthat being brokenby the top officials andthe contract is notprotecting and rescuing our American's from this disaster. A contract ofcitizenship defines the duties of care that public officials owe to the peopleof a democratic society. The Constitution defines some parts of this contract,and statutes define other parts, but much of it is a tacit understanding thatcitizens have about what to expect from their government (Ignatieff, 2005). Thisis a protection to help citizens in protecting their friends, families, andpossessions from the forces beyond their control. The Social Contract Theoryexplains the purpose of both morality and government which the morality is tomake social living possible and the government is to enforce vital moral rules(Rachel's & Rachel's, 2015). I would purpose to get the social contract backby having are government set up and do more for us as Americans. Americans areno longer binding together as a whole and that starts with the federal officialsfrom the president and on down. After the hurricane went through and destroyed many of places andAmericans were trapped in certain places, the were stuck for days. Someindividuals were stuck in such like a stadium and were not helped by anygovernment officials. The had to wait for some other citizens in the communityto come assist them. These people were stuck in this places for multiple dayswithout help.How the society could get things back on track would be for not relying on"leaders" but rely on people who were able to come together and work together. Alot of people like to have the control of others and be the boss of everyone,but this pushes people away. If everyone could work together and be happy andsolve problems together then this world would be a better place to live.
