Qualitative data attempt to find meaning in the experiences of the world through interpreting any information which is not objectively measurable. It is the subjective data of the world around us and the people who inhabit it. Within the field of qualitative research there are sub-fields which researchers can utilize in an effort to narrow down their focus even more. Of the sub fields there are two, phenomenological and ethnographic, bare a striking resemblance to each other yet are also strikingly different. Both phenomenological and ethnographic research seek to understand how those individuals view the world around them. The difference between these two approaches is how the individuals interpret what they see.Phenomenological research examines how build a framework with the information/their experiences to help aid in their personal understanding. For example, many phenomenological researchers would be having a field day if they were studying the current election. They would be conducting interviews of supports of both Trump and Clinton and attempting to examine how each interviewee personal experiences help build a framework related to their personal political choice. Ethnographic researchers examine how cultural "lenses" influence the interpretation and understanding of data/experiences. Ethnographic researchers might also examine political choice, but they would be attempting to understand how any cultural experiences/heritage may influence political choices. Regardless of the choice of the sub-field, Qualitative research provides a level of understanding which cannot be understood by using quantitative research methods alone.
